The Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) is one of seven institutes that constitute the Joint Research Centre (JRC), which is a Directorate-General of the European Commission providing customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of European Union policies. With 470 staff, the IES is one of the largest interdisciplinary environmental research institutes in Europe with key competencies in the field of earth observation, and integrated ecosystem research. In support to the Common Implementation strategy (CIS) of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), IES has played a key role in the coordination and development Europe-wide intercalibration process of the surface water ecological quality classification systems. Recently a research focus on development and harmonisation of WFD compliant bioindicators and ecological classification tools has been established.
Ana Cristina Cardoso (PhD), Leader of the EEWAI (European Water Quality and Intercalibration) group, aquatic ecologist with expertise in ecological status assessment systems, eutrophication assessment and benthic invertebrate ecology in lakes and coastal waters. Member of the EU Steering Group on Eutrophication and of the EU activity on the role of non-indigenous species in the aquatic ecosystems ecological status. She has participated to several national and international research projects (e.g. EU-project REBECCA).
Wouter van de Bund (PhD), limnologist, coordination of the WFD intercalibration of European river assessment systems. Expertise in intercalibration of assessment systems and river and lake ecology.
Núria Cid Puey (PhD) is a PostDoc at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES), Water Resources Unit at JRC. She was previously involved in several projects related with the ecological assessment of the main human pressures received by large rivers, such as pollution, hydrological alterations and the introduction of alien species. Recently she participated in the EU-funded project Mirage and is currently partner of the REFRESH project.
