Freshwater Ecology & Management group (F.E.M.), Dept. of Ecology of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB)

The Department of Ecology of the University of Barcelona was the first Ecology Department in Spain and was founded in 1967.
The first professor was Dr. Ramon Margalef and the present staff includes 4 full professors, 20 associate professors, 2 tenure-track lecturers, about 60 students and 7 members of technical and administrative staff. Research in the Department concerns nearly all fields in ecology following the paths of Margalef's work and ideas, with groups leading Spanish research in Marine Biology, Oceanography and Limnology. The Department begins each year about 20 research programs and 60 programs are running continuously including all kinds of financial support, from European funds to local governments, both in basic and applied science. Foreign relationships are very important and closer links exist specially with Latin-American countries.

The group responsible from this project will be the Freshwater Ecology and Management group (F.E.M.) with more than 30 years of experience in fundamental and applied limnology. In particular, the main research focuses of F.E.M. are:

  • Freshwater ecology and biodiversity of rivers, lakes and wetlands
  • Paleolimnology and global change
  • Biogeography and molecular ecology
  • Biomonitoring of freshwater ecosystems

Núria Bonada

Núria Bonada (PhD) is a tenure-track Lecturer for Ecology at the UB and has 10 years of experience working on research projects. She is a member of the FEM (Freshwater Ecology and Management) research group. Núria Bonada has special expertise on the ecology and conservation of aquatic insects in Mediterranean rivers and has been working in different Mediterranean climate regions of the world. She has published more than 40 publications including 15+ ISI papers.

Maria Rieradevall

Maria Rieradevall (PhD) is an Associate Professor for Ecology at the UB and has 20 years of experience working on research projects. She is coleading the FEM research group. Maria Rieradevall is now working on the ecology of Mediterranean wetlands and has special expertise on palaeolimnological studies using Chironomidae in lakes. She has published more than 100 scientific papers including 30+ ISI papers.

Narcís Prat

Narcís Prat (PhD) is Full Professor for Ecology at the UB and has 30 years of experience working on research projects. He is the head of the FEM research group. Narcís Prat has special expertise on the ecology and ecological status assessment of Mediterranean rivers and he is now leading several projects in Latin-America. He has published more than 100 scientific papers including 50+ ISI papers.

Ana Filipa Filipe

Ana Filipa Filipe (PhD) is a PostDoc at the UB at the FEM (Freshwater Ecology and Management) research group. Her main interests focus on understanding the patterns and processes of freshwater biodiversity across the landscapes, namely the role of ecological, historical and human-induced factors on constraining native and introduced organisms. Her expertise includes GIS, biodiversity databases, ecological modelling, and ecology of freshwater fish. Filipa has a broad experience working on research projects and her publications are mostly as first author in ISI papers.
