Freshwater Ecology & Management group (F.E.M.), Dept. of Ecology of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB)

The Department of Ecology of the University of Barcelona was the first Ecology Department in Spain and was founded in 1967.
The first professor was Dr. Ramon Margalef and the present staff includes 4 full professors, 20 associate professors, 2 tenure-track lecturers, about 60 students and 7 members of technical and administrative staff. Research in the Department concerns nearly all fields in ecology following the paths of Margalef's work and ideas, with groups leading Spanish research in Marine Biology, Oceanography and Limnology. The Department begins each year about 20 research programs and 60 programs are running continuously including all kinds of financial support, from European funds to local governments, both in basic and applied science. Foreign relationships are very important and closer links exist specially with Latin-American countries.

The group responsible from this project will be the Freshwater Ecology and Management group (F.E.M.) with more than 30 years of experience in fundamental and applied limnology. In particular, the main research focuses of F.E.M. are:

  • Freshwater ecology and biodiversity of rivers, lakes and wetlands
  • Paleolimnology and global change
  • Biogeography and molecular ecology
  • Biomonitoring of freshwater ecosystems
